Volunteers are a vital part of the Georgia Apply to College program and are key to the success of the events at the participating high schools. Volunteers provide assistance by:

  • Welcoming students as they arrive
  • Directing students to open computers
  • Assisting students as they navigate to the online applications on the GAfutures.org website
  • Answering any questions students may have as they complete their application(s) for college admission
  • Sharing college experiences and helping students get excited about college
  • Ensuring students sign-out following their participation
  • Volunteers do not need to be experts on the college admissions process. All that is needed is an interest in helping students take the first big step towards continuing their education following high school. We provide training and a handbook to help with the rest!

How to Become a Volunteer

Volunteering is as easy as these three steps:

  1. View the list of participating schools to find a school event that works with your schedule and that has requested outside volunteer assistance. Please be sure to check back as events will be added as schools confirm their participation!
    NOTE: Georgia Apply to College events take place at high schools across the state each November. Each summer, as high schools begin confirming their participation in the upcoming program, their event information is added here. If you do not presently see a link to the participating schools, please check back!
  2. Contact the school’s Georgia Apply to College Site Coordinator and let them know your interest and availability during their event. The school will then confirm your volunteer registration and provide you with more detailed information about their event. Please note that only those with participation that has been confirmed by the school should attend that school’s event.
  3. View the online Volunteer Handbook, found below, prior to attending your first Georgia Apply to College event. The handbook will provide you with the information you need to have a fun and rewarding volunteer experience!

Volunteers play a crucial role by helping students complete and submit their online admission application(s) during an event. The assistance typically provided by volunteers includes:

Individuals interested in supporting a high school event should contact the school directly and speak with their Georgia Apply to College Site Coordinator to sign up.

Do I have to volunteer for the entire duration of an event?
No, many events last all day and the high schools recognize that many interested volunteers will not be able to commit to an entire day. That’s okay! Just be sure to let the high school know your availability beforehand so they can be sure they have appropriate coverage for the duration of their event.

In order to volunteer, do I need to already be familiar with the online college application process?
No, it is not necessary for prospective volunteers to already be familiar with the online college application process. On the “Get Involved as a Volunteer” section of this site, you will find a Volunteer Handbook. We encourage all volunteers to review the handbook prior to attending their first Georgia Apply to College event. The most important thing volunteers do is encourage students as they work on their application!

As a volunteer, are there any training materials to help me prepare to help students as they apply?

The handbook has been developed to provide you with everything you need to know to have a great volunteer experience. As a college admissions representative, am I allowed to recruit during the Georgia Apply to College events?
No, Georgia Apply to College is not a recruitment event. We ask that all college representatives remove their “institution hat” and help students regardless of where they may be applying. Georgia Apply to College is a great outreach opportunity as we all work together to improve the college-going rates in our state. Of course, students will have many questions about specific colleges during the events and you are welcome to answer any questions about your institution. You are also welcome to show your school pride by wearing apparel from your college!

When do Georgia Apply to College events take place?

What should I do if I volunteer and find I cannot answer a question posed by a student?
That is okay! Each volunteer participating in a Georgia Apply to College event has different strengths and areas of expertise. We encourage volunteers to work together as a team to answer student questions. Also, each high school will have a Georgia Apply to College Site Coordinator, typically a member of the school’s counseling staff, on hand who can help answer questions and to troubleshoot any issues that may come up. Remember, the most important thing volunteers do during an event is encourage students not to give up or get frustrated if they run into difficulties as they work on their application.
