Volunteers are a vital part of the Georgia Apply to College program and are key to the success of the events at the participating high schools. Volunteers provide assistance by:
Here are some comments from previous GAC volunteers:
I loved being able to help the kids and being able to have conversations that really helped them think about their future.
The students were very willing to ask questions and the volunteers were all very helpful. I loved the atmosphere, it was calm and without stress.
I enjoyed the interaction with the students. I had forgotten what it was like to fill out an application and was amazed at all the questions that would seem straight forward but aren’t actually easy to answer!… Wonderful program! Keep it going!
This event is very beneficial. I helped a student who does not have a computer at home and other students whose parents would not have helped. I am certain some students may not have applied without his event.
Overall the event was great, encouraged kids to apply when they normally may have not done so!
Volunteering is as easy as these three steps:
The Georgia Apply to College (GAC) Volunteer Handbook provides registered volunteers with information to help them have a fun and meaningful experience as a GAC volunteer. All volunteers are encouraged to review the Volunteer Handbook prior to their first GAC event. Prospective volunteers are welcome to contact the GSFC Team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 770.724.9065 with any questions regarding the program.
What is the role of a Georgia Apply to College volunteer?
Georgia Apply to College events could not happen without the assistance of volunteers. For many students, especially first generation students, completing the application process can be confusing and even overwhelming. Volunteers play a crucial role by helping students complete and submit their online admission application(s) during an event. The assistance typically provided by volunteers includes:
How do I sign up to participate as a Georgia Apply to College volunteer?
Each summer, as high schools begin confirming their participation in the program, their high school name and event information is added to our website. Interested volunteers can find school contact information on the “Get Involved as a Volunteer” section of this site. Individuals interested in supporting a high school event should contact the school directly and speak with their Georgia Apply to College Site Coordinator to sign up.
Do I have to volunteer for the entire duration of an event?
No, many events last all day and the high schools recognize that many interested volunteers will not be able to commit to an entire day. That’s okay! Just be sure to let the high school know your availability beforehand so they can be sure they have appropriate coverage for the duration of their event.
In order to volunteer, do I need to already be familiar with the online college application process?
No, it is not necessary for prospective volunteers to already be familiar with the online college application process. On the “Get Involved as a Volunteer” section of this site, you will find a Volunteer Handbook. We encourage all volunteers to review the handbook prior to attending their first Georgia Apply to College event. The most important thing volunteers do is encourage students as they work on their application!
As a volunteer, are there any training materials to help me prepare to help students as they apply?
Yes! On the “Get Involved as a Volunteer” section of this site, you will a Volunteer Handbook. The handbook has been developed to provide you with everything you need to know to have a great volunteer experience. We encourage all volunteers to review the handbook and online resources before attending their first Georgia Apply to College event.
As a college admissions representative, am I allowed to recruit during the Georgia Apply to College events?
No, Georgia Apply to College is not a recruitment event. We ask that all college representatives remove their “institution hat” and help students regardless of where they may be applying. Georgia Apply to College is a great outreach opportunity as we all work together to improve the college-going rates in our state. Of course, students will have many questions about specific colleges during the events and you are welcome to answer any questions about your institution. You are also welcome to show your school pride by wearing apparel from your college!
When do Georgia Apply to College events take place?
November is designated as Georgia Apply to College month. Participating high schools set aside a day or days in November to hold their Georgia Apply to College event. Each summer, as high schools begin confirming their participation in the program, their high school name, as well as event date and time, are added to our website.
What should I do if I volunteer and find I cannot answer a question posed by a student?
That is okay! Each volunteer participating in a Georgia Apply to College event has different strengths and areas of expertise. We encourage volunteers to work together as a team to answer student questions. Also, each high school will have a Georgia Apply to College Site Coordinator, typically a member of the school’s counseling staff, on hand who can help answer questions and to troubleshoot any issues that may come up. Remember, the most important thing volunteers do during an event is encourage students not to give up or get frustrated if they run into difficulties as they work on their application.
